How I pick a winner: Each reader gets a number that corresponds to when they sign up. Right now there are 5,304 readers on my daily and weekly email list. I plug in 1-5,304 (or whatever the last reader number is when the contest ends) into Random.org, which randomly selects one number.
I repeat this process to pick three runner ups in case the first place winner does not respond. When the contest ends I notify the winner and runner ups via email. The winner has 48 hours to respond or I go to the first runner up, and so on.
