Cathy at Chief Family Officer shared four hot grocery deals this week at Ralphs, which faces $256,000 in fines after an undercover investigation found the chain was overcharging customers. The chain was slapped with similar fines in 2008 and 2009. Does that make you want to shop elsewhere?

Yes, please continue to feature Ralphs deals. I shop regularly at Ralphs. And yes, I know about the overcharges and fines; it happens in the supermarket industry all the time. However, I find Ralphs the best market for me – price, location, reward program, etc.

Yes, please continue to feature this. I like the idea that Ralph’s doubles coupons.

I always check my receipt before leaving the store and have had more problems with Ralph’s items ringing up at the wrong price than any of the other markets. It becomes a drag to have to go back and get the item checked and rerung, and they are supposed to give you back the whole amount not just the difference, plus you can keep the item for free. So that is the only redeeming factor here. Also you have to watch that clearance items ring up at the clearance price because they used to not put the sticker over the barcode, but are now doing so at my store. If the clerk didn’t see the sticker, it would scan by the barcode price. Don’t know about other locations.

Over the years, I’ve been personally aware of problems with the Ralphs chain, including difficulties experienced by my daughter-in-law over maternity leave coverage. Also, the prices at Ralphs are, and have been, somewhat higher than at many other chains, despite the previous doubling of coupons. Problems have been experienced at 4 of the locations currently under investigation. I try to avoid shopping at Ralphs, even though one of them is located near my home.

Yes, please,,, These kinds of things happen all the time in this business. I think Ralphs just didn’t pay off someone and got turned in. Happens all the time in the market business. Sad but true. I personally find our Ralphs has the best prices and coupons overall.

I shop from Food 4 Less over Ralphs (even though both are really “Kroger”) because the Ralphs “discount” prices are Food 4 Less’ regular price. And yes, I buy the exact fried chicken mentioned in the article and I can tell by handling the bags (or by taking them over to the produce scales) that some items are underweight. As a general rule: if it feels light, don’t buy it.
I don’t think the food packers are purposely trying to cheat customers; they just need better training and accurate equipment. But as a consumer it’s really rocked my already shaken confidence when buying from big chain grocers.
