Halloween tray from 99 Cents 225x300 Halloween bargains abound!I stopped by the 99 Cent Only Stores yesterday because their full-page Halloween ad caught my eye. Were the bargains as good as they looked in the paper?

Yes and no, but mostly yes. Here is what I saw:

  • CANDY! Mostly non-brand name candy, but also plenty of premium treats, like Smarties, mini-Sugar Daddy’s, Tootsie Roll pops, Dots, mini-Butterfingers, mini-Baby Ruth’s, mini-100 Grand’s, mini-Junior Mints, Reese’s Pieces, and king size Hersey bars
  • Halloween themed dishes, bowls, plates and trays for party food and snacks
  • Paper plates, cups and plastic serving platters in orange and black
  • Small decorations like tiny plastic pumpkins, curled ribbons, stickers, scarecrows and orange tissue paper
  • Costume accessories like skull masks, bone gloves, and swords
  • Costumes for small girls, including sparkly skirts and tops, pom poms, and purses
  • Sparkly makeup and face paint
  • Four types of witches hats
  • Flashlights

I’m currently on a Smartie sugar high, thanks to my lack of willpower. I also bought an 8-pack of mini-Butterfingers which I have not opened…yet. Find a 99 Cents Store near you. If you live outside CA, NV, AZ and TX you’re out of luck!

Fashion Lovers Guide book cover Guide to incredible fashion bargainsI got sucked into The Fashion Lover’s Guide to Incredible Bargains even though the author, Debbie Weisberg, is a hard core fashionista who pays for top shelf labels. She admitted to owning 40 pairs of black pants! I don’t have 40 of anything.

Debbie breaks up reviews of bargain chains and online retailers with short stories about her fashion exploits, like how she got a $10,000 mink coat for free. Now that’s a gloat every bargain hunter can appreciate!

She also shares tips for shopping online, describes 10 items you MUST have in your closet, and lists basic rules for smart shopping. Even though Debbie loves to buy clothes, she says there are certain times you should not shop:

  • when you’re on vacation – aside from mementos to remember your trip, returns are often impossible and it can be difficult to gauge the authenticity
  • when you need a special outfit of piece of jewelry and have less than one week to find it – instead of buying under pressure, look deep inside your closet (and the closets of your friends!) to find a suitable ensemble
  • when you’re with friends who pay full-price – go along for the social scene instead
  • when you’re tipsy – booze inhibits your fashion sense and puts your budget in jeopardy

I don’t agree with all Debbie’s advice, however. This is how she starts chapter two. “Upon spotting that incredible bargain, do not ask yourself if you need it. (You don’t). Simply buy it and gloat at your good fortune.”

If you’re never going to wear that incredible bargain or if your budget has more pressing needs, I would pass on an incredible bargain. But that’s because I am more budget-focused than Debbie, whose love of shopping comes though loud and clear. Her passion makes reading the Fashion Lover’s Guide fun.

Girl eating peach cute 300x248 Kids eat free! One of my favorite money-saving websites, Kids Eat 4 Free, just re-vamped their homepage so it is even easier to find a free meal for your rugrats. You can search by city and state or by zip code. For both options you can select which day of the week you want to find a free meal for.

For example, if you wanted to eat out tonight in Los Angeles, you have tons of choices, including at Boston Market, Denny’s, Dinah’s, Marie Callender’s, Sharky’s and Soccer Tortas.

If you live in Austin, TX there are plenty of options. Same for Phoenix, Jacksonville, Fla., or Lexington, KY. Check how many restaurants are listed in your state.

Each result gives you the restaurant address, phone number, and a link to get the freebie details. You can also vote on a specific restaurant.

The site is expanding to Canada soon. Hope it helps you find a restaurant that will feed your kids for free!

Frugal Foodie Cookbook book cover 257x300 Reader winner Frugal Foodie Cookbook! My review of the Frugal Foodie Cookbook unleashed a firestorm of almost 70 comments, including an easy-peasy recipe from Maggie that I’m going to try as soon as I kick this flu-ish bug I’m carrying.

BEER BREAD

1 can or bottle of beer
3 cups flour (they say self rising, but whatever you have would work fine, I should think)
3 tbsp sugar

Mix dry ingredients, then add beer, using a wooden spoon & then your hands. It will be sticky. Pour into a loaf pan, bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Holy yummy carb-y goodness icon smile Reader winner Frugal Foodie Cookbook!

Jim has another name for frugal recipes:

My fiancee calls her version of those meals “fake it dinners”. Emptying the last vestiges in the pantry prior to getting a new load from the grocery store. We had one such meal last night. Squash/chicken drumsticks in a honey mustard marinade/salad. Tasty/simple/inexpensive.

Wendy shared a recipe for easy black bean soup:

Saute one onion, 1/4 inch dice, in 2 t. oil in a 3 qt. sauce pan, until soft. Add 2 t. cumin powder and 3 cloves crushed garlic to the onions and saute 30 seconds. Add one can re-fried low-fat or no fat black beans. Stir well. Add water until it’s the desired consistency (about 1-2 cups). Add 1 can drained and rinsed black beans and 1/2 jar of your favorite salsa. Throw in a handful of frozen corn. Adjust amount of water as necessary. Heat to simmering and serve.

Doreen says she makes do with what’s on hand:

A lot people want this book!!! I truly get excited when I can cook/bake something that doesn’t require another trip to the store. It was great when my son was home from college and i’d say ‘Ethan would you please run to the store for an onion’ and he would look at me like I was nuts but had to have that onion or can of chicken broth or whatever! But now that he is back at school the creativity kicks in and SURPRISE dinner is served! And by the way, there is nothing wrong with a can of soup and a sandwich after a cold evening watching your daughter play soccer until 7:00!

The winning comment came from Barbara, who gives a frank look into what it is like to make dinner at her house. We’ve all been there!

you know how kids are always saying “there’s nothing to eat” after you just spent $100 at the market? well, that’s ME !!! hahaha i am not very creative & figuring out what to do w/leftover ingredients makes my head spin. i usually end up with boring chicken (what??? you can mix your own stuff up to make a marinade?) just steamed vegetables (i am excited if i remember to melt butter over them) and what do i do with the mega box of bread crumbs (feed the birds?) bargain babe, i need help & this book…and if i go to amazon, i’ll end up being un-frugal & end up buying way too much stuff!!

If you didn’t win, check your library for a copy of the book or buy it from Amazon for $10.85. If you missed the scone recipe I made from the cookbook, grab it here. The scones freeze well and are perfect after being warmed in the toaster. Excellent with tea!
