A reader named Ann pointed out a trick that warrants special attention. It stands to save us all a lot of money!
Check with your grocery store on their “expired coupons” policy!
I’ve thrown away HUNDREDS in expired coupons, but I just found out (and verified with a store manager) that my local ShopRite in Linden, NJ will honor expired coupons for up to 6 months AFTER the expiration date!
The catch is that they will ONLY honor those coupons which are clipped from the newpaper inserts – NOT the ones you print from your computer (so if you don’t already have one, get a subscription to your Sunday paper…it’s WELL worth the $1.50-$2.00 a week!
What a nice – and financially cheery – surprise! In these tough economic times, we need all the help we can get!
After reading your comment Ann I’m trying to track down the coupon policies of all the grocers and major retailers I shop at. So far I’m not finding too many of these policies online, perhaps because individual stores have their own policies.

At 3 different fast food places, they each handle the offered coupon differently, one glanced at it , hit a key on the register and crumbled up the coupon and threw it in the trash, The next one, looked at it, credit it to my payment, smiled and handed it back and said please use it again. The third one checked the date, rang it up and put it in the bottom of the cash draw. Just shows everyone has a different policy on coupons.

Baja Fresh honors expired coupons and Rubios will too if you mention that Baja Fresh honors them. Depending on the checker but Ralphs will honor expired if it’s only a day or two. The new self check outs at Pavillions honors all coupons expired or not.

Thanks for the tip, Ann. I’ll check my local Stop & Shop and Shaw’s (RI and MA area) to find out their policies but it sounds reasonable. Good to know!

We were at Walmart today & they take ANY and ALL manufacturer coupons. We were at the Superstore in Santa Clarita with a coupon from Ralphs and eventhough it said Ralphs, it also said “Manufacturer Coupon” so they accepted it.
