I got laid off last November, and still don't have a full-time job. Leah was right on the money talking about what she felt when she got the news. I suggest also keeping track of all your spending and also all the info you get re: unemployment, food stamps, etc in a notebook.
I took a part time job outside of my industry and am doing consulting work in my industry to stay in the loop. So far, I'm managing. But it's not easy. No vacations for me in the near future!

With only a couple of months savings to see her through, I'm rather surprised Leah is taking off on vacation. I think I would be in panic mode the minute I left the boss' office. Hope she has a husband to support her. Engineers are well paid, right? Strange she doesn't have larger reserves. I wish her well with that.

Thought I'd share too... this was good for me to read as well. I was laid off 3 weeks ago from a teaching position I had held for a long time. I thought I was safe, because, well, let's fact it... we will always need teachers, right? I had seniority behind me, degrees and education, and no reason to think I would be gone. And yet, here I am. Because I worked for a private school, I cannot collect unemployment either; private schools are not required to pay into unemployment, so I cannot receive any. I truly don't know what I will do, and I can relate to the unexpected flood of emotions, confusion, and other feelings so similar to mourning. These are scary times, and I hope that things will come together quickly.
