I discovered a blog called Poorer Than You that has a list of 15 places to get free books online, including paperbacks, audio books and textbooks. Could this be better than the library?
I have not heard of most of these sites, like BooksShouldBeFree.com, which has audio copies of Pride & Prejudice, Ulysses, and other classics. Project Gutenberg has more than 28,000 free books in their catalog and links to another 70,000 free books. Students give away textbooks they no longer need and receive books in return on TextbookRevolt.com.

The library. If you use the Web site lapl.org (and you live in Los Angeles), you can get stuff from any library in the system delivered to your local branch.

I heard they now charge – I think $1 per book – for delivery to your local branch. It used to be free. In related news, swimming at LA public pools used to be free if you had a LAPL card, now it is $2. Still not a bad deal.

great news..thanks for sharing.
I had put a “stop” on buying any books until June 2009.
And even then i will only buy paperbacks and used copies.
I give them as gifts to friends, family and my nieces/nephews.
- literacy is important and also the “book” is the best.
But i might break if the kindle ever comes out with a full color screen.
btw- “google books” has over 500,000 free public domain books you can download. You just have to do a search.
