Hi Julia…I really enjoy reading all your tips and suggestions on “How to do whatever the topic for saving “.

My mother used to negotiate for a better deal by offering to pay all cash for an expensive item. She only did it for owner operated businesses and not chains. She almost always got a better price. The other method for saving was asking for a discount of the amount it would cost the seller to process rhe sale with a credit card by paying cash.
This method is usually a no brainer for the seller.

Great idea. If you are paying in cash, why not ask for a discount equal to what it would have cost them if you had used a credit card?

    Hi Julia,

First of all I wanted to thank you for all your wonderful tips. I found myself thinking “what would Bargain Babe do?” the other day when I was at the grocery store. They had a couple packages of flank steak (which is a bit pricey) dated through that day. I knew by tomorrow they would be trashing them (hopefully). So I talked to the butcher and told him that I would buy both of them if he gave me 50% off and he agreed. I never would have even thought to do something like that before. It never hurts to ask! Thanks much!

Thanks to the “nagging” of a couple of my friends, I was able to get the monthly cost of my DSL/phone service cut almost in half. Also, I’ve lucked into savings at the meat/fish counter at a particular market, which also has a separate section for reduced price meat items. Kind of like a double savings with minimum haggling.

Haggling is a way of life in other countries–why should we be shy about it in America? I think if the opportunity is there, don’t be shy–get that lower price! You deserve it!

I’m with you 100%, Joe. It takes practice to get over shyness, but once you successfully haggle it motivates you to try again.
