So you are not one of the 50,000 people who got laid off today, but you are worried that in the next round you will be on the list. A recent story from Fortune suggests 10 things you can do to improve your chances of sticking around. Here are some of the best ideas:
- Stay positive. Nobody likes to be around a downer.
- Create 30-day and 60-day goals. Let your boss know about them and keep him/her in the loop as you reach them. A tangible measurement makes you look like you are contributing to the company’s progress, which means your job will be harder to cut.
- Updates your skills by taking a class, reading a book, or attending a lecture.
- Take on extra responsibilities while making sure your tasks serve an important purpose for your company.
- Do not badmouth anyone. “If you can’t be positive toward someone at work, be neutral,” says Deb Bright, a longtime executive coach. “In the next reorganization, the person you were trash-talking could be your new boss, and then you’re gone.”
