Everyone is talking about the flu. According to US News, it’s the worst flu outbreak in recent history. Google is even tracking the pandemic in a map. It lists the US flu activity as intense. Yikes! Dreading the sniffly, sneezy, achy feeling? Below I share cheap ways to keep you healthy.
Note, I’m not a medical practitioner. I’m just a frugal gal sharing inexpensive tips that have worked for me in the past.
- Stay away from sick people. This may be difficult, as many people still go to work when they are sick (tsk, tsk!), or you may have kids who are sick. If you can’t avoid them, just be extra diligent at keeping yourself safe.
- Scrub your hands. Soap and warm water will do the trick. Don’t use antibacterial soap. Whatever you do, keep your hands away from your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. Don’t forget to moisturize.
- Brush up on you coughing and sneezing etiquette. The correct way to do it is to cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.
- Get extra rest. I always get sick when I’m stressed and sleep deprived. My immune system is the most vulnerable when I’m not getting my zzz. The same may be for you so try to getting a restful nights sleep every night.
- Avoid stress. It feeds the common cold and flu by making you vulnerable to inflammation and other health problems.
- Drink liquids to stay hydrated. Sip water and teas, and make soups for dinner. My family swears by sage tea, and sage extract (add a couple drops to warm water). It can help calm coughs!
- Get the shot. I’ve never gotten the flu shot, but some people swear by it. There’s still time to get pricked. Get the best flu shot deals.
- Get your Vitamin C. Increase your intake of fruits and veggies that are high on Vitamin C.
- Use a saline solution. Keeping your nose hydrated will reduce your chances of getting sick. Dry nasal passages make it easier for airborne pathogens to enter your body.
- Gargle with salt water. It can soothe sore throats, keep respiratory passages moist, and acts as a decongestant.
